THE
ROAD TO THE ISLES ‘The Road to the Isles’ is the more romantic name for the 46 miles of the A830, which winds its way from Fort William to Mallaig through magnificent scenery. The road passes first through Glenfinnan, famous for the railway viaduct carrying the railway to Mallaig, and Monument, commemorating the place where in 1745 clansmen rallied to the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie (although there is some dissent locally as to the exact location of the rally. Next is Loch nan Uamh, and the stone cairn marking the position where Bonnie Prince Charlie left Scotland in 1746, never to return. Continuing along the road there are fantastic views looking out over the sea to the small isles, and finally Mallaig, the end of the road and where the ferry leaves for Skye.
